The English for Bilingual Children Program(Maple Bear TM) will enrich the children’s English language learning through the use of factual reading materials. The units are designed to assist the children to understand and use books to gain knowledge and to use the English language through a variety of learning activities. The more a child is exposed to and uses English the faster fluency in the language will develop.
A chart will be presented to summarize each unit. The chart outlines the learning objectives for the unit and the learning activities in which the children will engage.
Each unit integrates the five streams of a Canadian based Language Arts program: Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking and Viewing. The lessons are designed to allow the children to experience activities in each of the five streams. These experiences will be presented to the children through the use of a variety of different teaching strategies.
The children will learn how to use the different features in books to assist with the understanding of the text. Different reading strategies will also be emphasized to prepare children for the introduction of new vocabulary. Comprehension of the information will be emphasized.
The children will engage in writing activities, responding to the text. The written component allows the children to extend their thinking and to apply the information gained through reading. It also allows for opportunities to use imagination. Children will learn the different structures of the English language to enhance their writing skill.
Children will engage in group activities to allow for the oral use of language. They will be involved in presenting ideas, projects and artwork to the rest of the class and will learn to respond to the ideas of others.
